Porsche 914 & 914/6 Exterior (Side View) Mirrors

Your Option.

Every production Porsche 914 and Porsche 914/6 car came with a single exterior mirror on the driver's side. There was a very seldom purchased factory option for a passenger side mirror (part number 914 731 040 10), which differed from the left side mirror (part number 914 731 039 10) only in that the glass was slightly convex. The housing is identical - even to the extent that the safety number stamped on the back of most of the later "curved-arm" mirror housings is upside down on the factory-mounted right side mirrors. Both the early and later style side mirrors were symmetrical and constructed to pivot completely, and the factory installed the mount plate for an exterior right side mirror on every Porsche 914 and 914/6 vehicle produced. As a result, it is very easy to add a passenger's side exterior mirror by simply "flipping" a spare stock driver's side mirror and mounting on the left side door after reverse drilling the the sheet metal from the factory mount (although you would need to replace the glass in order to match the factory optioned right side mirror).

1970 - early 1972 Porsche 914 & 914/6 Side Mirrors

The 1970 through early 1972 Porsche 914 and Porsche 914/6 side mirrors, part number 914 731 039 10 (left) and 914 731 040 10 (right), have non-magnetic 300 series alloy stainless steel housings attached to a 90 degree angled stainless steel alloy arm via a spring-tensioned pivot (the information on the metal composition was submitted by a machinist who is a 914 original owner). The mounting base attached to the upper arm stud is chromed steel that tends to corrode, pit or bubble. The glass fits into a plastic inner holder and is secured with a black, plastic snap-in retainer. These early mirrors are smaller than the later style by a few millimeters in both height and width.

Late 1972 - 1976 Porsche 914 Side Mirrors

The late 1972-1976 Porsche 914 exterior mirror bears identical part numbers to the earlier style, but there are three subtle differences. As noted above, the later mirror is slightly larger. "MTP-RT210" is stamped into the back of the housing on most later models, while the earlier mirrors have no markings. Most noticeable, however, is that the "arm" of the later mirrors is curved instead of angled.

Note, however, that the mounting plate of both the early and later style side mirrors is identical, allowing them to be interchanged. All Porsche 914 side mirrors employ a plastic gasket between the mount plate and door to protect the paint and buffer vibration.
